GRAY-NICOLLS Shine in Opening Round of Shield

Wed 13 October 2010

Andrew McDonald was in stunning form as he blazed 163 from 116 balls for the Bushrangers opening Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia in Perth.

McDonald made history as the first Victorian to make a century before lunch in a Sheffield Shield match and also recorded his seventh first class century.

Starting the day off on 9* McDonald piled on the runs like he was playing a Twenty20 match - his innings included 21 fours and seven sixes over 128 minutes.

NSW opening batsman Nic Maddinson has achieved a memorable feat by becoming the youngest every player for New South Wales to score a century on his First Class debut. Maddinson scored 113 versus South Australia at Adelaide Oval aged 18 years and 294 days.

The previous record was held by the legendary Arthur Morris who scored 148 v QLD at the SCG on the 26th December 1940, aged 18  years and 342 days.

Maddinson also becomes the fourth youngest player to score a First Class century for NSW with only Archie Jackson, Ian Craig and Doug Walters being younger.

A stunning double century from Usman Khawaja guided NSW Blues to 5-479 at lunch on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

Khawaja smashed 214 including 32 fours and posted his highest first class score in the process before he was dismissed by Aaron O'Brien.
